Research and Planning: Preliminary Task, Contents Page.
Contents
To do my contents i used Indesign. I decided i wanted to have 2 columns, to do this i clicked on layout, create guides and typed in how many i wanted.
I then wanted to to change the colour of my background, to do this i clicked on the rectangle box on my tool bar and then clicked on one corner of my page to the bottom opposite, i then clicked on what colour i wanted.
After this i typed out my contents. I decided to do this in all star font and in yellow size 48pt. After this i wanted a photo so i clicked on file, place, found my picture and then drag and dropped it onto my contents page.
Then i started writing out my page numbers in yellow, then beside them i did snippets of information on what will be in the article in white.
After this i then decided to add more pictures in by doing the same as before.
Evaluation
The things i like about my contents is how i have carried on the 3 colour scheme from the front cover. I also like how i have carried on using the same font throughout. I also like how i have not crowded it too much with pictures and font.
I dislike how my picture of Hyde Clarendon sign is very big, i should of cut around the wording on the picture. If i had any smaller you wouldn't be able to see the writing on the picture. I also think that i shouldn't of used big spaces between my page numbers. I also think that the yellow page numbers are slightly too big and could be made smaller.
I think if i had made the gaps smaller for the page numbers i could of put more pictures in to describe the college. I should of also cropped the picture of the sign Hyde Clarendon so i didn't have as much background in the picture.
Audience interview: Keisha Hughes.
Q. What do you like about my contents page?
A. - I like how you have carried on the colour scheme from the front cover. I also like that you have got different pictures on there. I like how you have also used the same font as on the front cover.
Q. What do you dislike about my contents page?
A. - I dislike how you have got big spacing inbetween page numbers. If you made the spaces less you could space the picture out a little bit more because they look a little crowded.
Q. Does it look like a college magazine, contents page?
A. - Yes, because of the font and the pictures which are used on the contents page.

Research and Planning: Preliminary Task, Front Cover.
Front Cover
To do my front cover, i did it on photoshop. I started by changing the colour of my background to black. To do this i clicked on the paint bucket, picked my colour and then clicked on the background.
I then added text onto my background. I decided i wanted to call my magazine 'Shine at Hyde' . To do this i clicked on the text button, picked my font which is Snell Roundhand in 200pt and in yellow. I then clicked onto my page where i wanted the font and typed 'Shine' . I wanted to have at Hyde in a different font and slightly smaller. I did 'at Hyde' in all star font at size 75pt. I then added a drop shadow, i did this by layer, layer style, drop shadow. I then picked my opacity to 27%, distance to 33px, speed 51% and size 185px. I did my drop shadow in white for it to stand out. Under the title i then added the website in white in arial size 22pt.
I then had to find a picture, i then opened it onto photoshop. I then had to remove the background of the picture, to do this i used the magic wand clicked on the background then clicked reverse and drag and dropped it onto my front cover.
Once i did all this i then had to do my stories. I wrote first edition in arial 30pt in yellow, i did this to show that it is the first ever college magazine. I then needed to write interesting stories on the front to get my audience interested. I decided the main head lines should be in yellow in size 30 pt and then a snippet of information to be in white size 18pt.
I then took a picture of a barcode and placed it onto my front cover, i also needed to write a issue number and date.
Evaluation
Things i like about my front cover is:
Q. Does The front cover look like a college magazine?
A. - Yes, it does because it has got stories which relates to students, it also has a picture of a girl who is the same age of who the magazine will be aimed at.
Q. Do you think i have picked a good layout?
A. - Yes, it all looks spacious apart from the top where the first edition is too close to the picture making it look a bit crowded.
Q. What do you like about my front cover?
A. - I like how you have only picked 3 colours, not making it look to chaotic. I also like the font of the masthead.
Q. What do you dislike about my front cover?
A. - I dislike how the picture is stretched and seems like she is cramped into one side.

Research and Planning: Fonts

Theses are 3 different mastheads for three different magazines. Theses are my practice fonts, and i have been playing around with the fonts. Even though the first 2 are both for music magazines they are for different types of music. The first one is for a rock magazine, therefore i have choose a dark font, i would class this font as a scary rock metal font. I have also give it a drop shadow to give it a darker look. I have then give it a inner shadow in white to give it contrast, to make the font stan out.
For my second font i have used a font which looks playful and exciting, to compliment the genre of music. I have also give it a pink colour to show its for pop, when we see the word pop we think bright colours. I also give this a drop shadow to make it stand out.
My last one is for a film magazine. When you hear the word popcorn you firstly think but films and how you eat popcorn whilst in the cinemas watching a film. I then thought of popcorn at fairs and give the font a fair font. I would also associate this font with the cinemas. I give it a red colour to show fun. I also give it a small drop shadow to make it stand out. If I did a bigger drop shadow it would be too overwhelming.
Research and Planning: Semiotics.
Semiotics are a study of signs. Semiotics are just signs which give you clues to what it is such as: a rock magazine maybe black whereas a pop magazine maybe pinks and blues. Semiotics are not just colours it can be pictures and writing too, such as a model dressed in a formal manner and books in the hands may give away that it is a teachers magazine, whereas if there is a young model in casual clothing it shows it is aimed at teenagers. Theses small signs help us see the difference and help us figure out what it is actually about.
As you can see on this magazine, it is black with a white masthead to give contrast and also to give a rock feeling. The font is also very rocky. The model in the background us dressed rocky and can also be known as scruffy, with the long hair, bandana and sunglasses. Also the leather jacket which is know for motor-bikers and motor-bikers are also known for rock and roll. It also has names of bands who are well know rock bands such as guns n' roses. All theses are known as semiotics.

research and Planning (Target audience for magazine)
My college magazine is aimed at both male and female readers. The age i am targeting at are in the range of 16 - 20 year olds who are studying part time/ full time A levels or BTEC's. The interests of the teenagers that go to this college are either sport related, performing arts, technology or hair and beauty. I think the students who i am targeting at will be in either working for middle class, in society.
Research and Planning (Examples of medium close up)
Here are some examples of some medium close ups. I will be using medium close ups on my college magazine.
Research and Planning (Analysis of college magazine)
This magazine is aimed at a students at college. This is a good example of a college magazine.
- The magazine has got a masthead called College which is in a green colour. This colour is used alot on the front cover of the magazine as part of the theme.
- Below the masthead there is a slug line but it is too small for me too read.
- The image is of a student who is dressed informal, and casual but has also has books in his hand, including law, business and society.
- On each side of the image there is little articles of what will be in the magazine. These articles aim to students, for example: 'College couture' which gives the readers advise but also makes the magazine more informal and interesting.
- At the side it has a barcode and price.
- There is only 3 colours on the front of the magazine, to look more organised and not too chaotic.

Research and Planning: Introduction to photoshop (skin tutorial)
This is my skin tutorial, where i edited her skin tone, hair colour, lip colour, eye colour and added makeup to her. To do this i went through stages.
- I first used the healing tool (which looks like a plaster) on the tool bar and zoomed in and covered any blemishes she had.
- I then opened a duplicate layer then clicked onto filter, then blur, then smart blur, which changed her skin tone. We then changed the opacity to make her look more realistic.
- We then zoomed in and added makeup to her eyes and lips, by using the brush tool.
- I then changed the colour of her eyes using the brush.
- I then changed the colour of her hair by using the brush tool and coloured in her hair.
- I then changed the colour of the background by using the magnetic lasso tool. I went round her then used the colour of the background by using the paint bucket tool.

Research and Planning: Introduction to photoshop (CD cover)
This CD cover my first piece of work i have done on Photoshop in media studies. This is the first time i have ever been on photoshop, and my media teacher thought this would be a good way of introducing us to photoshop. Theses are the steps we had to do:
- We had to place the CD and the Horn onto the background.
- We did this by using the magic wand tool to select the CD and the Horn and then we used the moving tool to move them to the background.
- Once we did this we then had to move them and rotate them. We did this by clicking on edit, transform and rotate, then simply rotate.
- We then added text to the CD cover, we did this by pressing text on tools bar then clicking on the CD cover where you wanted the text. Once you have done this we change the fonts and size. We also added a drop Shadow onto the text by going onto layer style then add drop shadow to my text.
- I also changed the opacity of the background by going on layers and then choose the strength of opacity.
- I then changed the colour of the CD by using he paint bucket and choosing my colour.
- I also revealed some of the notes by finding the notes on the layers list and clicking the little box next to to it making them visible.
